ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. (WGNO) – Authorities in Louisiana say more than 12,500 people are at risk of a brain eating amoeba that was found in the water system.
That water sample collected by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals tested positive for Naegleria fowleri, a potentially deadly amoeba.
Last year, the same brain eating amoeba was blamed for two deaths in the state.
Health officials say the amoeba can only be harmful if it is ingested through the nose.
Authorities are currently working on a chlorine burn through the water system, followed by a 60 day waiting period to see if the amoeba has been flushed out.
