GAINESVILLE, Fla. -The Florida Gators have a new head coach…Jim McElwain from Colorado State.
The school announced the hiring on Twitter.
According to ESPN.com, the deal didn’t seem like it was going to happen after Colorado State refused to budge on McElwain’s $7.5 million buyout and Florida had refused to pay the entire amount.
ESPN.com reports that it is unclear at this point if Florida agreed to pay the full buyout amount or if the schools settled on a smaller amount.
McElwain, 52, was in his third season at Colorado State (10-2).
The hiring puts the rumor mill to rest that a coach in Oklahoma was going to the Gators.
There were rumors floating around that Bob Stoops from OU and Mike Gundy from OSU were on the list of possible replacements for UF Football coach Will Muschamp.
According to ESPN.com, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley was looking for somebody with a strong offensive background, and McElwain fits that bill.
On Tuesday he was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year.
