Injury to children has prompted Ikea to recall about 58,000 safety gates in the United States.

The safety gates are white, made of steel and plastic, and measure about 29 inches high and with an adjustable width.

The friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted safety gate is insufficient to hold the gate in its intended position, posing a fall hazard.

There have been at least 18 incidents worldwide, including three incidents in which children have been injured as a result of falling downstairs.

Ikea stores nationwide and online sold the safety gates from August 1995 through February 2015.

Consumers should stop using the gates and return them to any Ikea store for a full refund.
