ST.LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KTVI) - Authorities in Missouri are investigating a road rage incident that left a man with a broken nose and cracked teeth.
Janet and Donald Akers say they were heading to a cemetery on Mother's Day to place flowers on Janet's mother's grave.
However, they never made it.
As they exited the highway, Janet says she honked the horn when a Dodge Ram started moving into her lane.
Akers gestured to the driver to pull over in a parking lot, so she could explain why she honked.
"His wife jumped out of the truck. She came over, started yelling at me," she said.
At the same time, she said the driver got out of his truck and approached their vehicle, armed with a gun.
"He held the gun first, I didn't know if he was going to shoot us or what. But instead, he hit me right across the nose with it. Broke my nose, my sinus cavities, broke my teeth," said Donald Akers.
At that point, Janet says she began to fight back before bystanders broke up the fight.
She called 911 and took photos of the scene.
"So the police came and went over directly to them. And were talking to them, laughing, joking around," she said. "We feel like they knew him right off the bat."
"[Officers] told us he was an off-duty police officer, that's exactly what they told us," Donald said.
The couple says that Donald was not offered medical treatment right away and officers searched their car.
"They never searched that guy's truck. He had the gun," Donald said.
According to St. Louis County police, the report is sealed since the road rage incident is an active investigation.
At this point, the names of those involved are not being released.
Authorities say they are working to determine whether any charges will be filed and against whom.
"I'm scared. I thought they were going to shoot my husband, and I was really scared for that," said Janet.
