WASHINGTON (CNN) – A former governor and presidential hopeful is making waves with comments he made about a man’s transition to becoming a woman.

Mike Huckabee says there was a time that he wishes he could have been transgender.

“Now, I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” Huckabee said. “I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.”

Huckabee’s comments came in February at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Tennessee.

At the conference, he said there was something wrong with making children be a part of the “social experiment” to become transgendered.

“Yet today, we are the ones who are ridiculed and scorned because we point out the obvious,” he said. “That there is something inherently wrong about forcing little children to be a part of this social experiment. I’m not against anybody. I’d just like for somebody to bring their brain to work some day and not leave it on the bed stand when they show up to govern.”

The comments are now getting attention following the release of Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover.

When CNN asked Huckabee about Jenner’s transition, he said, “Not going there.”
