CHICAGO, Ill. - While Americans across the country were celebrating Independence Day, police in Chicago were dealing with an outbreak of violence.

In all, 10 people were killed and 52 others were injured in shootings since Thursday afternoon.

Police superintendent Garry McCarthy called for an end to the violence after a 7-year-old boy was among those fatalities.

Amari Brown was shot after someone opened fire in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on Saturday night.

According to NBC 5, Brown was standing on the sidewalk with his father watching fireworks when the gunfire erupted.

Amari and a 26-year-old woman were both shot in the chest.

The boy's father says he thought the sound of gunfire was just fireworks and he didn't realize Amari had been shot until he called out for him.

McCarthy says the bullet was intended for Amari's father, who is a documented gang member who has been arrested 45 times.

According to NBC News, there were more than 2,000 shootings in Chicago last year. The city is on pace for more this year.
