NEW ORLEANS, La. – A man in New Orleans is recovering after being shot while trying to stop a woman from being attacked.

Peter Gold, a 25-year-old Tulane University medical student, spotted a man dragging a woman along a sidewalk around 4 a.m. on Friday.

Surveillance video captured Gold getting out of his car and walking up to the gunman.

A few seconds later, Gold walks back into the range of the camera with his hands up.

Authorities say Gold was telling the gunman that he didn’t have any cash when the man shot him once in the stomach.

At that point, the gunman points the gun at Gold’s head but it jams.

The surveillance video shows he fiddled with the weapon and tried to shoot Gold two more times, but the gun still would not fire.

Gold was rushed to a nearby hospital and is listed in guarded condition.

“While we deeply appreciate everyone’s concern, support and prayers as our family faces this crisis, our sole focus at this time is on Peter’s recovery,” a statement from his family read.

Gold is a fourth-year medical student who did his undergraduate work at the school.

“He is an outstanding student who represents the best of Tulane in every possible way,” Tulane University President Mike Fitts said.
