TULSA, Okla. – A Tulsa couple is behind bars after an 11-month-old little girl was admitted to a nearby hospital in “extremely critical” condition.

Emergency crews were called to the Parkview Terrace Apartments after 11-month-old Nevaeh Estellita Brookens-Roldan was found unresponsive.

According to the Tulsa World, the baby was unresponsive and in cardiac arrest when medics arrived.

Reports also indicate the child had two black eyes and multiple bruises to her face, back, inner thigh and neck.

Police say 25-year-old Nathaniel Watkins was watching the child while the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Hallelujah Brookens, was at a Job Corps class.

Watkins claims Nevaeh wouldn’t stop crying, so he told police he yelled at her and then shook her until she went limp.

The arrest report claims Watkins then put the little girl in a cold bath to wake her up and poured water over her face.

At that point, Watkins told police he thought the baby had drowned, so he dressed her and laid her on a couch.

The arrest report alleges that Watkins told officers when he came back into the room, Nevaeh had fallen off the couch and was gasping on the floor.

Watkins told police he shook the baby again, dropped her in the crib and went to the neighbor’s house for help.

Watkins was arrested on a child abuse complaint.

Hallelujah Brookens told officers she didn’t trust Watkins around Nevaeh, but left the child in his care because she didn’t have any other options.

She was arrested on a complaint of permitting child abuse.

The Tulsa World reports that the child had not regained consciousness by late Tuesday night and showed signs of a brain injury.
