OZARK, Mo. – A deadly attack is stumping investigators in Missouri.
“The extent of the injuries that Mr. Vogt had, they – they honestly were horrific,” Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole told KYTV.
Investigators say 85-year-old Werner Vogt was riding his bike in a heavily wooded area in northeastern Christian County when he was attacked.
Once he regained consciousness in the hospital, he told authorities he was attacked by a pack of dogs.
“Just as we do with a photo lineup to identify a suspect to a witness, that’s what we kind of did with these dogs,” Cole said. “We provided several pictures of large breed dogs and he couldn’t identify any of those as being anything that attacked him.”
Investigators say Vogt’s injuries were extremely severe, but they weren’t sure that dogs caused the damage.
Now, authorities are relying on a wildlife expert in Florida to examine the evidence and identify the attacker.
“We sent the pictures of the injuries, pictures of the crime scene. We’ve just sent a lot of that down there to him to look at and examine and give us an idea of what he thinks could have happened,” he said.
Tragically, Vogt died from his injuries a month after the attack.
