CALIFORNIA — Lawrence Phillips is a former NFL who ended up in prison in 2008. In 2009, he was sentenced 31 years for separate incidents, including assaulting his former girlfriend and driving his car into three teenagers.
The former running back was in prison awaiting trial on charges of killing his cellmate in 2015.
If convicted, he would have faced the death penalty.
Phillips was found unresponsive in his prison cell Wednesday morning, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
His death is being investigated as a suicide, the department said.
Phillips was a star player at Nebraska, and later played for the St. Louis Rams, the Miami Dolphins, and the San Francisco 49ers.
