BELLVUE, Colo. – A Colorado mother is recovering after a tragic accident claimed the life of her husband and sent her to the hospital.

According to KUSA, 35-year-old Jill Schmucker was going into labor on Jan. 13.

Her husband, Tony, and their two children hopped in the car to head to the hospital.

However, their trip ended in tragedy.

The Colorado State Patrol says Tony Schmucker had a medical episode while behind the wheel of the family’s SUV, causing him to veer off the road and crash into an embankment.

Authorities say the SUV hit a boulder and a tree before rolling over. Tony and Jill were both unconscious when the SUV finally came to rest.

Amazingly, the family says one of the children was able to call 911 for help.

Tony was rushed to a nearby hospital, but died from his injuries.

Jill was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent an emergency C-section to deliver the baby.

The baby survived, but Jill has a long road to recovery after doctors say she broke her back in the crash. Both children suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
