OKLAHOMA CITY - An investigation is underway after a man finds a human bone next to a gun in his pasture.

"Police were notified that a man, who lives near the 8200 block of Piedmont Road, found a pistol out in a field, along with what he believes to be a human bone,” said Msgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

While the reporting party didn’t want to go on camera, one of the land owners tells us it was their dogs who found what they believe is a human skull next to the gun.

"Officers went out there, had a look. Today, the homicide unit went out there along with the medical examiner to try to determine what happened ,” Knight said.

Police said investigators are still determining what the cause of death was.

"Sometimes, that's very difficult when all you have is skeletal remains, but that's certainly something they're very good at. So, that's where we stand right now. We're kind of in a holding pattern to wait and see what they can tell us,” Knight said.

Knight said, at this point in time, they don’t believe it was foul play, however he said it’s early in the investigation, so that could change.

“We know that there are various homeless camps around the city. There's one not too far from there, so it's possible one of those guys may have passed away out there,” Knight said.

The landowners said this shocked them and is out of the ordinary for the area.

On Thursday, the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner's Office announced that the bones are human.
