PELL CITY, Ala. – A 12-year-old girl was pronounced dead while playing a game at Williams Intermediate School on Thursday afternoon.
Chief Greg Turley, with the Pell City Police Department, told WBRC that the sixth graders were playing on the playground when nurses noticed something was wrong.
The girl, who playing a game of tug-of-war with friends, suddenly collapsed.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators say it doesn’t appear as if the girl had any underlying medical conditions that her family knew about, and they also don’t believe heat played a factor.
They say there were several water stations available to students as they were playing outdoors.
