OKLAHOMA CITY – According to an arrest affidavit, a group that was caught back in May for having drugs and paraphernalia around two small children included their grandfather.

It started with police patrolling an area that they say often leads to trouble.

“Police officers pulled in and they saw a vehicle in there that looked suspicious. Often times drug transactions are made in parking lots just like this. So, obviously that got the officers attention,” MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

Police say officers walked up to the vehicle in the Magnuson Hotel parking lot. There were several people inside, including two children.

“They ended up searching several of the people in there, found drugs, found methamphetamine, pipes for smoking it, found a syringe, found a spoon where they`d been burning,” Knight said.

Knight says all of that was within an arm’s reach of the kids.

“While it`s going on the children are actually sitting right beside them in the car. So, the kids are right there in the presence of all of these drugs,” Knight said.

Jesse Petross, Brittney Heddlesten, Trenton Cole and Chancey Cole were all arrested at the scene.

Court records indicate Heddlesten, who was inside the hotel when police searched the vehicle, is the mother of the children and Petross is their grandfather.

“Obviously, they`re not going to be left in that situation. They were released to a relative at the time,” Knight said. “It`s a good piece of police work. They realized that this goes on in some of these parking lots, saw a vehicle over there that they thought might be engaging in this type of activity, stopped, talked to them, checked the situation and that`s exactly what it turned out to be,” Knight said.

Trenton and Chancey Cole’s charges include possession of CDS/meth in the presence of a child under 12.

Petross’s charges include eluding a police officer.

Heddlesten is charged with a hypodermic syringe violation.
