CHAPIN, S.C. – Two soldiers who were trying to protect a woman at a South Carolina bar were shot and killed.

Deputies told WLTX that 40-year-old Staff Sgt. Charles Allen Judge, Jr. and 29-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Michael Prins were shot and killed outside the Frayed Knot Bar & Grill early Sunday morning.

Authorities say 25-year-old Joseph Mills was fighting a woman outside the bar, and the two men intervened.

Witnesses told WLTX that Mills was kicking and hitting the victim on the ground. At that point, a group of people, including Prins and Judge, pulled him away from her.

That’s when police say he pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting Prins and Judge multiple times.

Mills fled the scene but was arrested a short time later for two counts of murder.
