Research printed in the Journal of the North American Menopause Society shows grandmothers who babysat their grandchildren once per week reached higher cognitive test scores.
However, there is a limit - the study also found that too much time with the grand-kiddos can backfire.
Some parents notice that after a week of managing their kids' schedules, cooking for them, cleaning up after them, refereeing arguments between them, mending bumps and bruises, making sure they they really did in fact brush their teeth, etc., can leave parents a bit foggy-brained by the end of each week.
The same goes for grandparents. The study found that more babysitting is not better.
In fact, grandparents who babysat five or more days per week scored lower on the same cognitive tests.
Besides improving the risk of dementia, the National Institute of Aging adds that caring for grandchildren creates an emotional bond that often leads to a more active lifestyle, healthier eating, and could lead to quitting smoking.
On the other hand, the Institute points out that loneliness creates higher blood pressure and can lead to depression.
So, grandparents, grab those grandkids! Another study shows that your grandchildren also benefit from spending time with you!
