Oklahoma City travelers told to prepare for parking fee increases at Will Rogers World Airport

OKLAHOMA CITY – Attention travelers: there are big changes in the works at Will Rogers World Airport including potential parking rate increases, another surface lot and a fourth covered parking garage.

Travelers can expect to pay more for parking, anywhere from $1 to $2 more per day. In return, those extra fees will help add additional parking spaces, offering more options for flyers.

“We have a huge demand for parking and a big demand for garage parking,” said Karen Carney, public information & marketing manager with Will Rogers World Airport.

Millions of dollars worth of improvement projects are happening now, like redoing elevator stations and new signage to replace these black & white outdated ones.
“Unfortunately, you have to have a way to pay for these improvements but I think one of the things people need to understand is the prices at Will Rogers World Airport have been traditionally low for a very long time,” said Carney.

A fee increase is what’s going to help pay for existing projects and future ones, like a new surface lot with 1,750 additional spaces and a fourth parking garage.

For the airport’s remote parking, the long-term service lot and the canopy parking, fees will increase by $1 per day.

The garage parking is going up $2 per day.

“The rate increases across all of the lots will bring in an additional $2 million per year,” said Carney.

Airport officials said the need for parking is a result of a booming economy, despite the downfall in the oil industry.

“I think this is a positive sign for Oklahoma City. We’ve had a lot of growth over the past several years,” said Carney.

It’s not a done deal, the fee increase still has to get final approval from the Oklahoma City Airport Trust.

Once that recommendation is approved, the airport hopes to implement the new fees starting Nov. 1.

The new garage could take up to four to five years to complete.
