Oklahoma teen says she was kidnapped by someone she met on Instagram

OKLAHOMA - Police are investigating a kidnapping and a possible sexual assault.

It all started on the social media app Instagram.

A 15-year-old girl said she met someone on the app and decided to go a date with him.

She said they met on a Wednesday and set up a date for later that same day.

“The male came to her apartment to pick her up. She got in the car and, at that point, she realized that the man on Instagram was not the same man driving the car,” said Travis Vernier, Oklahoma City Police Department.

That’s when the car doors locked.

The teen said she couldn’t get out.

After a 20- or 30-minute drive, she said they stopped at an apartment.

“Over the course of the next several hours, she was forced to take drugs,” Vernier said - both marijuana and meth.

According to police reports, she was told by the suspect to "Smoke this, or something is going to happen."

After that, she said she passed out and can’t remember anything else until she woke up at a skate park near Lake Olverholser.

Her pants were unzipped and unbuttoned.

She eventually made it home, and her mom took her to the hospital to be examined for a possible sexual assault.

She told her mom "She did not think she would ever see her again."

Police said, though shocking, the number of young teen girls meeting boys they friend on social media isn't rare.

According to a 'Journal of Pediatrics' study of 231 girls ages 14 to 17, a staggering 30 percent reported meeting someone they met online in person.

“Using those kind of apps, you always run the risk that you are going to end up in a dangerous situation. So, we would encourage people, if you are going to do that, make sure you meet in a public place and don't just hop in the car. Make sure you talk to that person before you decide to go anywhere with them,” Vernier said.

Currently, police don't have a suspect description in this case, but they do have the account information for the person who originally set up the date.

They are hoping that leads them to the suspect.
