Community asks Oklahoma City councilman to help stop development

OKLAHOMA CITY-- Dozens of people are fighting a planned Northwest Oklahoma City development, saying it will bring more traffic to an already dangerous road.

We are talking about State Highway 4 near Britton road.

This year there have been 33 accidents on the stretch of highway, and three of them have been deadly.

Matthew Silva was a light at Yukon High School.

"He was kind of the life of the band. He was very well liked, popular, good student. I mean, he was the all-American kid,” Superintendent Dr. Jason Simeroth said.

Matthew, and another student, were on the way to band practice when they collided with a semi near Britton and SH 4.

At age 17, Matthew was killed.

"It was horrible. It was heartbreaking because I, this is what I want. I want to stop things like this from happening as much as possible,” Brandi Reynolds said.

Reynolds started a petition before Matthew was killed.

It calls for the roads to be improved and widened before anymore growth in the area.

At a Thursday meeting community members asked city leaders to stop the Redstone Ranch development.

It is expected to bring 1,200 new homes to the area.

"We don’t have the infrastructure. It truly will affect the quality of life here. The Surrey Hills area,” Robert Terry, a Yukon resident, said.

Making their roads more dangerous is not the only concern.

Overcrowding at Yukon schools is too, along with emergency response times.

Oklahoma City Council member James Greiner is addressing the concerns. He wants to add safety improvements to SH 4 as soon as possible.

"What I promise is to relay all of their concerns back to our public works department, who are the people that can actually make it happen,” Greiner said.

Immediate suggestions are to put up a four-way stop at Britton Road and a dangerous intersection sign.

There is no timeline for when the development could be built.

To stop it, residents would have to appeal the planning commissions decision.
