‘Human error’ to blame for utility bill spikes in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. – Hundreds of Edmond residents say they were stunned when they received their utility bills recently.

Last month, Robin Howser told NewsChannel 4 that her utility bill doubled in one month.

“It said our usage went from 6,000 gallons in one month with no changes in our water bill to 39,000 gallons,” Howser said.

On Friday, the City of Edmond announced that 818 utility customers had been undercharged for water usage during the months of May, June and July.

Officials say the situation was caused by human error and not associated with any technical or equipment issue.

“We apologize to the 800-plus water customers who were impacted and inconvenienced by this situation,” said City Manager Larry Stevens. “Maintaining public trust is of great importance to us, and we are in the process of working with each of the individual customers to adequately resolve their concerns.”

Officials say customers had their usage rate dropped to the lowest-tier, and the city will be issuing a total of $54,542.70 in credits on September bills.
