Charges upgraded against woman accused of killing MMA fighter’s son in hit-and-run
LOS ANGELES – The charges have been upgraded against a 72-year-old woman who was arrested after allegedly killing a young boy in a hit-and-run accident.
Officials say 15-month-old Liam Mikael Kowal was in a stroller being pushed by a 15-year-old girl when they were hit in a crosswalk on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawthorne Police Department says that they found the girl and the baby lying in the street.
Investigators learned that 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins drove through the crosswalk, hitting both of the kids and fled the scene of the accident. Witnesses followed Higgins for about a block until they could block her in until police arrived.
Tragically, Liam died several hours later.
Higgins was initially booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunk driving. However, police upgraded the charges to vehicular manslaughter after consulting with the district attorney’s office.
