ALPINE, Texas — Sheriff’s officials  say one victim has been shot at a high school in a small Texas town.

Authorities with the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to CNN that one person was shot at Alpine High School on Thursday morning.

According to Brewster County Attorney J. Steve Houston, one person was killed, adding that the shooting occurred in the school’s band hall.

Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told CNN that the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, adding that the victim was shot in the lower extremities.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

Also, a police officer was also accidentally shot by a marshal while responding to the school. The condition of the officer is unknown.

The school, which has about 280 students, was placed on lockdown, according to the school district.

The shooting comes just over two weeks after the school year started.

Alpine, Texas is located about 200 miles southeast of El Paso and has about 6,500 residents.
