OKLAHOMA CITY – An early morning apartment fire took the life of a 4-year-old in northwest Oklahoma City Tuesday.

Just before 2 a.m., fire crews say a woman was cooking dinner for her husband who was on his way home from work when their apartment at the London Square Village Apartments, in the 7600 block of N.W. 6th, caught fire.

Fire officials say two infants and a 4-year-old were inside the apartment with the woman at the time of the fire.

Neighbors rushed to the apartment to help, pouring pots and pans of water on the fire.

Before fire crews arrived, the woman was able to get the two infants out of the home.

The woman went back into the apartment to get the 4-year-old, but then had to be rescued by firefighters. Fire crews say they found the mother in one of the bedrooms and were able to get her out through a window.

A short time later, crews found the 4-year-old boy and got him out through the front door.

They were both rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Sadly, the child did not survive.

“We just received information that the 4-year-old child did not survive, so we do have one confirmed fatality. The adult female is reportedly in very, very critical condition,” Dist. Chief Benny Fulkerson with the OKC Fire Department said.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

KFOR crews are working to gather more information.
