Oklahoma man arrested in connection to murders of two California girls over 40 years ago
MARYSVILLE, Calif. – Authorities said a man in Oklahoma and another in California have been arrested in connection to the killing of two girls in California more than 40 years ago.
Yuba County sheriff’s officials said federal authorities aided in the Tuesday arrests of 65-year-old Larry Don Patterson of Oakhurst, Oklahoma and 65-year-old William Lloyd Harbour of Olivehurst, California.
Authorities said the men are suspects in the November 1973 deaths of 12-year-old Valerie Janice Lane and 13-year-old Doris Karen Derryberry of Olivehurst, California.
Authorities said the girls were driven to a wooded area near Marysville, north of Sacramento, and shot at close range.
The girls went missing after going on a weekend shopping trip.
Just a few hours after their families reported them missing, deputies found their bodies along a dirt road.
The case remained unsolved for decades until the evidence was reanalyzed using new technology in 2014.
The U.S. Marshals Service said Patterson was being held on multiple charges, including as an unregistered sex offender.
Officials said the men were just 22 years old at the time of the murders.
