“There’s a baby inside, and we can’t get him out,” 4-year-old Oklahoma boy killed in apartment fire

OKLAHOMA CITY - The light from fire trucks and flames cut through the darkness at London Square Apartments as crews worked save two people inside.

A neighbor called for help.

"There's a big fire," she said to a dispatcher. "There’s a baby inside, and we can’t get him out. There’s a lady in there, too."

A group of five neighbors took action quickly, grabbing whatever they could get their hands on.

"Water buckets, pots, pans, whatever we could find. If it had water in it, we were going to throw it," one neighbor said. "We could at least keep it from spreading. I think we did a good job. It was starting to spread to the breezeway, but we were able to keep it just to that apartment."

Investigators said there were four people inside the apartment when the flames took over.

Not everyone made it out.

"It was reported to us that the mother had taken the two infants out first and was on her way back inside to try to get the 4-year-old when she was overtaken by the fire," said Benny Fulkerson, Oklahoma City Fire Department.

Firefighters made it there shortly after and started searching for her.

"We did quickly find the female in a bedroom, and we removed her out of the rear unit of her apartment unit," Fulkerson said.

They found the 4-year-old boy soon after.

Paramedics worked to save them both, but the little boy didn’t make it.

Authorities have identified the boy as 4-year-old Zeus Moore.

Police have classified the fire as undetermined.

They believe it was an accident, but they can not pinpoint the cause of the fire.
