OKLAHOMA CITY - While many Oklahomans were out enjoying the cool fall weather on Tuesday evening, they noticed something strange in the sky.
Viewers in western Oklahoma noticed a bright light in the sky that didn't appear to really be moving.
As it turns out, it was a research balloon released from Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
The balloons typically ascend to well over 100,000 feet and grow in size as they go higher in the sky. Jet streams are responsible for carrying the balloons hundreds of miles away from the launch sites.
Crews on the ground constantly monitor the position of the balloon, and GPS locators help them find it when it either lands or pops.
