GUTHRIE, Okla. – A man has been arrested in connection with a brutal assault that left a victim in critical condition.
The family of Antonio Taylor, who was brutally assaulted earlier this month, said it is thankful an arrest has been made, because it’s been hard watching Taylor fight for his life.
"Justice is going to be served. He's finally been caught. No more running,” said Taylor’s aunt, Daisy Powell.
Almost two weeks ago, 33-year-old Tommy Tucker allegedly sneaked into his estranged wife’s house and beat Taylor in the living room.
The assault was so brutal, Taylor had to be put in a medically-induced coma.
“His memory is still not intact. He comes in and out. You know, one minute he'll know who you are, he'll talk to you and, then, you walk out of the room and come back, and he won't know who you are,” Powell said.
Powell said Tucker was a close friend of Taylor’s.
"He called me Aunt Daisy for the longest time,” Powell said.
A warrant was issued for Tucker’s arrest and, on Wednesday, he turned up in Oklahoma County.
"Our deputy was up in the Waterloo, Coltrane, Sorghum Mill area around 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon when he observed a vehicle driving by with a passenger not wearing a seat belt,” said Mark Opgrande with the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
That passenger was Tucker.
The driver of the vehicle eventually got pulled over for failing to use a turn signal.
"He asked them if he had any ID, and this person did not have any ID. He asked him his name, and he gave him a different name other than Tommy Tucker,” Opgrande said.
Thanks to a casino card inside Tucker’s wallet, the deputy was able to identify him.
Tucker was later transported to the Logan County Jail.
"Our deputies do this all the time. That's kind of our whole deal, you know, they look beyond the stop,” Opgrande said.
"I’m happy, ecstatic, just blessed that he was able to be caught," Powell said.
The family is hosting a bike ride benefit for Taylor on Sunday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The ride will start at The Blowout Club in Guthrie.
