Oklahoma dad arrested after 3-month-old rushed to hospital in critical condition

OKLAHOMA CITY - A metro doctor called police after an Oklahoma mother brought her 3-month-old baby to the hospital in critical condition.

The mother took the little girl to the hospital on Thursday afternoon and told doctors that she had “rolled off the bed approximately one week ago" as an explanation for the girl's injuries.

That mom said the baby cried hysterically for about 15 minutes but seemed fine after that.

But Thursday morning, she noticed her “forehead appeared swollen and that her arms and legs were ‘tensed up like she was having a seizure.’”

“The child had injuries that were inconsistent with the story that doctors were being told by the family,” said MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Family members identified the infant as 3-month-old Janell Thomas.

The doctor called police, who interviewed both parents and ultimately arrested the baby’s dad, 22-year-old Kentrell Thomas, on a felony charge of child neglect.

Police say Thomas was with the baby when she was injured.

“I don’t know what happened to my granddaughter. God, no, she’s just born …,” cried the baby’s grandfather, Richard Williams.

Williams said he does not think his son is capable of hurting his children.

“He loves his children to death. I mean, she brings them down when she goes to drills and like I said he keeps diapers, feeding, baths, no problem. He loves them children to death,” said Williams.

Thomas was arrested in May for domestic abuse after allegedly hurting the mother of his children in the driveway of his dad’s house.

According to the police report, he “grabbed her head and then slammed it into the steering wheel of the vehicle.”

This happened while their 1-year-old son was in the back seat. The couple's son is in protective custody, while the little girl is in a Tulsa hospital.

Williams said he did not have an update on her condition.

“She’s too young. I’m putting my faith in God, so that’s the best we can do. I mean, we’re praying,” said Williams.

Thomas remained in the Oklahoma County Jail on Thursday night.

A formal charge had not yet been filed against him.

Police say the investigation is still in the early stages and that charges could be modified, adding that other people could possibly be arrested.
