To start Saturday the Sooners stormed the field with one of the best backfields in the country.
Samaje Perine opened up OU’s scoring, but left the game on the second drive.
Bob Stoops said he could have played but held him out, and to a walk.
Allowing others to jump into action.
“We have a ton of guys,” Mark Andrews, OU sophomore receiver, said. “Obviously Samaje is a special player, but we have Joe back there, Abdul and a bunch of other guys that can make plays and help the team with out him in there. That’s nice to see. For us to be able to overcome to that big loss especially early on, so that’s big for us.”
Another familiar face was on the Sooner sidelines.
Trevor Knight decided to visit OU and his twin brother during his off week.
As Texas A and M’s quarterback he currently has the Aggies 6-0 and ranked sixth in the country, but some took offense to him wearing a Sooners shirt on Saturday.
But as Bob Stoops put it, ‘he’s one of us,’ and everyone else agreed.
“It’s Trevor Knight,” Dede Westbrook, OU senior receiver, said. “You have no choice, but to love him. He has a beautiful smile, and like I said, he has a lot of muscles, so everybody loves him. He’s just a champion. Like wherever he goes he’s going to uplift people around him regardless of what they’re going through. He’s the type of person you want on your team and in your locker room all the time. He’s going to pick up up no matter what.”
“You spend as much time working, fighting, sweating and blooding with these guys for four years you don’t forget that just because you went somewhere else,” Bob Stoops, OU head football coach, said. “We’re proud of him, I’m happy for him and you’ll never find a better young man.”
Focusing forward on the future Baker Mayfield makes his awaited on field debut at Texas Tech next week.
So how about those fans from his former school?
“Old fan base, yea, they will be ready for me when I get down there,” Baker Mayfield, OU junior quarterback, said. “That’s for sure. I’m excited for it. It’s always fun to go play in Lubbock. Obviously this time I’m on the other side of it. It will be an interesting matchup, but I’ll get my guys ready, and it will be a good time."
