OKLAHOMA CITY - An Oklahoma City police lieutenant is on paid leave Monday night after he was caught up in the middle of an FBI prostitution sting.
36-year-old Lt. Alex Edwards was booked in the county jail this weekend on numerous complaints, including aiding in prostitution, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit a felony.
21-year-old Kiani Mongi’s prostitution arrest led to Edwards’ arrest.
Now, Edwards’ future with the OCPD is in question and so is just about every case he’s recently touched.
Behind the ads on websites like Backpage are young women asking for cash in exchange for their escort services.
It’s a story Oklahoma City detectives know well, except when it’s one of their own.
“The evidence shows Edwards was attempting to arrange a prostitution meeting with this woman, where sex would be exchanged for money,” said Capt. Paco Balderrama.
Police said Edwards arranged to meet Mongi at a hotel in Oklahoma City but, before that deal happened, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics arrested Mongi.
A police report shows the undercover agent gave Mongi a $220 service fee.
Mongi allegedly agreed to sex for the money, and she ended up in the back of a squad car.
Then, agents went through Mongi’s phone and said they found text messages between Mongi and Edwards.
He was allegedly alerting Mongi about a prostitution sting.
Now, defense attorneys said Edwards’ arrest could cast a shadow on cases being prosecuted.
We’ve learned Edwards worked on the IMPACT team, which is a key investigative unit of the OCPD that carries out search warrants and gang-related crimes.
“If they found a piece of evidence or possibly executed a search warrant or took a statement from a witness, it’s very possible they would be a necessary witness. If they have pending criminal charges, the implication is they’re trying to get a deal from the government they work for,” said legal analyst David McKenzie.
Edwards worked in the Springlake division of OCPD, where convicted rapist Daniel Holtzclaw also worked.
Edwards is free on a $50,000 bond.
