WASHINGTON – While millions of Americans flocked to the polls on Tuesday and waited for hours in line, many had no idea the race to the White House would come down to the wire.

Throughout much of the evening, the lead changed between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

However, the tide seemed to turn when Trump claimed victories in swing states like Ohio and Florida.

Trump won most states in the central part of the country, including Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.

Clinton was able to earn victories in California, Washington, Oregon, New York, Illinois and North Carolina.

Despite having powerhouse states like California behind her, Clinton was unable to reach 270 electoral college votes before her opponent.

Just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Trump was announced as the 45th president of the United States.
