Police investigating officer-involved shooting that left man hospitalized

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Police Department is investigating and a neighborhood is rattled after an officer-involved shooting that happened Sunday morning.

"People have families. Everybody has a family. Like, I just don't understand,” said Jamelia Ellis.

Jamelia said, on Sunday, her brother was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, after he was shot by a police officer.

"Officers pulled a vehicle over. We believe the driver of this vehicle was Dorles Ellis. Mr. Ellis, then, jumped out of the vehicle and began to run away,” said Captain Paco Balderrama with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

That led to a chase, and other officers soon joined the search.

"An officer who was looking in the area for the suspect, Officer Colton Ellis, saw an individual in an alley that fit the description of the driver,” Balderrama said.

Dorles then allegedly ran from Colton, who has no relation to the suspect.

"The officer caught up to him, engaged him and during this engagement is when he discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” Balderrama said.

What caused the officer to pull out his gun has yet to be determined.

"In reference to the actual details of how it played out, we have yet to interview the officer. Keep in mind, for our policies, we wait 48 hours before we actually sit down with the officer,” Balderrama said.

No matter what happened though, Dorles’ family members said they’re ready for some answers.

"My brother would not try to fight some police, like, seriously? And, they already said he didn't have a gun on him, so why shoot him,” Jamelia said.

Authorities said Colton has been put on administrative leave.

Dorles is expected to be all right.

Once he is released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on drug possession charges.
