Their house was destroyed in the May 3 tornado in 1999.

Now the family is picking up the pieces a second time; the most recent Moore tornado claimed their home again.

MOORE, Okla. – Thursday students from Briarwood Elementary had a chance to meet and say goodbye to their teachers.

They met at Wayland Bonds Elementary.

Briarwood third grader Brianna Roper said, “I’m actually pretty happy; it will be good for me.”

It was exciting, yet somber day for students.

Gerald Carney recently retired from Briarwood.

He was a crossing guard so he knew most of the children.

He said his heart sank when he heard Briarwood was hit.

He said, “I was kind of lost. I didn’t know how my children were doing.”

While it was a happy day with hugs, balloons and stuffed animals, the memories of Monday won’t soon fade.

Cameron Clark, a Briarwood student, “I saw it was totally destroyed. My eyes were watering. I was wondering if all my friends were OK.”

For 9-year-old Brianna, it’s hard to talk about.

Her tears come easy though her mom said it is therapeutic to keep talking about the storm and also to come see others who are dealing with the same sorrow.

MOORE – A cell phone recorded audio of a teenager rescuing two young girls at Plaza Towers Elementary School Monday.

When the tornado hit the school, Jacob Lyles ran to the building and started looking for children.

Lyles said he climbed through a hole and found a girl trapped under the debris.

At some point, Lyles’ cell phone, which was in his pocket, somehow started recording the rescue.

On the recording Lyles told the little girl:

“I got you sweetie, ok. How far are your legs back? Are your legs straight? Oh no, you’re tucked right here.”

Then moments later Lyles said he pulled the girl out.

The girl then told him “thank you so much.”

“I was just saying, ‘Sweetie, stay calm. We are going to get you out of here. You got a lot of stuff on you but don’t worry we are going to get you out of this,’” Lyles said.

The recording was just under two minutes long.

Lyles can be heard saying “Look at me right now. Stay calm I’m going to get you out of here, OK? Alright, baby you got a wall on you, we are going to get you out of here.”

The audio cuts off right as Lyles said he was pulling out the second girl.

Lyles discovered the recording when he returned to his home just a few blocks from the school.

MOORE, Okla. – Our In Your Corner team has a warning for all Oklahomans.

Scammers are using the natural disaster to try to pad their pockets, preying on our most vulnerable neighbors.

Oklahoma’s Attorney General’s Office is already receiving complaints of storm chaser scam artists in the Moore area.

Avoid quick fix schemes.

Be leery of pushy contractors demanding cash up front and offering special deals.

The AG is also putting the word out about charity fraud.

News Channel 4 photojournalist, Norris Kyles, was on his way to cover the devastation in Moore when he received a scam text message.

Do what Norris did! Ignore the text!

If you respond, you’re essentially confirming your identity to the spammer.

Plus you may end up with a recurring monthly charge on your phone bill, which can be difficult to spot.

Don’t reply to random text messages, emails, or voicemails.

Research charities online.

Don’t believe every tale you read on social media websites.

Be wary of stories and photos posted on social media sites, especially when someone is asking for cash!

Report fraud to National Disaster Fraud Hotline toll free at (866) 720-5721

After this week’s tornadoes, baseball is an afterthought in Oklahoma. The Big 12 decided to move the tournament back an entire day due to those effected by the tornadoes.

OU opened the tournament today, May 23, facing off against Baylor. Jonathan Gray led the Sooners from the mound to a 2-0 victory. Gray picked up a complete game shutout pitching win and had 12 strikeouts versus the Bears. Nate Feken has more on how the Sooners hope to be a distraction for those who were hit by the tornado.

MOORE, Okla. – The deaths of children at Plaza Towers Elementary calls for a change.

Right now there is no state law requiring schools to have safe rooms or tornado shelters; only 100 of the our 1,800 schools have them.

However, state leaders and a corporation are mobilizing grief into action.

A new fund set up with $500,000 seed money from Apache Energy Corporation is going to make sure Moore schools have storm shelters.

State House Representative Jon Echols is one of the lawmakers behind it.

“What we have done, a bipartisan group in the house of reps decided to start a non-profit that will focus on retro-fitting and putting tornado shelters in Oklahoma schools.”

The Apache money is specifically earmarked for Moore but the hope is the fund will expand.

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The death toll from Monday’s tornado still stands at 24, but it’s important to remember the loss of life actually began the night before on Sunday.

That’s when an F-4 tornado flattened a mobile home park outside Shawnee.

While much of the spotlight remains focused on the Moore area, that community is also recovering from tragedy.

His home destroyed, Billy Mitchell saved one prize possession, the last and only picture of his parents.

“It was like getting my heart back you know,” said Mitchell.

Sadly, just across the street, this now empty foundation is where Mitchell’s elderly neighbor 79-year-old Glen Irish once lived.

“As I come running up, Gen Irish was right here, unrecognizable,” said Billy Mitchell Jr. “You can imagine all the pieces going through him. It wasn’t good.”

“It’s amazing how one minute it’s here and the next it’s all gone,” said Tammy Hasbell.

Her boat wrapped in a tree, metal frame bent and twisted, Hasbell’s home once stood on an empty slab before flying in the neighbor’s yard.

Funeral services for Irish were held Thursday in Shawnee.

A second man from Shawnee, 76-year-old Billy Hutchinson also passed away after Sunday’s tornado.

In the meantime, dozens of homes and businesses were wiped out in Carney on Sunday, including several that belong to the same family.

David and Juanita Knox rode the storm out in their storm shelter along with their son and grandkids who live right across the street.

“Just trying to pick up the pieces at this point and make a life again,” said Jeremy Knox.

Jeremy saw his home and business flattened to nothing but a twisted pile of debris.

“It’s gonna be an uphill struggle to get back to where we were,” said Jeremy.

Jeremy’s sister Beth also lives next door as well.

Her home suffered some damage but didn’t collapse.

“We’re not gonna live on the same street anymore,” joked Juanita Knox.

Despite losing all their homes and most of their belongings, the Knox family knows they are some of the lucky ones.

“After Moore and the kids, we’re ok,” said Juanita.

“I’m thankful my whole family made it,” said Jeremy.

“You keep it in perspective. This is stuff. In Moore, people are losing kids.”

By Ashley Kringen

NEWCASTLE, Okla. – Moore wasn’t the only city to be devastated by Mother Nature this week, Monday’s deadly tornado ripped through Newcastle, prior to tearing through Moore.

Many people in this community are left with no home and are doing everything they can to save precious items lost in the rubble.

Broken glass could be perceived as unlucky, but for one family in Newcastle, finding family pictures spared from the destructive tornado is nothing short of good fortune.

The Leger family recalled the frightening day, when they saw the sky swirling and knew a tornado was headed their way.

“It just felt like it was on our entire bodies. It just felt like pressure all inside the chamber we we’re in,” said Kala Leger.

Kala and Jason have four kids, in fear and shock at the time of the chaos.

“We can do this for four to five minutes we can do this. We’re safe down here and of course the whole time we’re thinking I hope we’re safe down here, you want that latch to hold,” said Leger.

The Leger family is searching for anything they can save such as a bible that’s been in their family for decades and their son’s favorite bear Sunny.

“My baby books and the little keepsakes from when they were babies, I wanted my wedding dress and pictures,” said Leger.

As the search continues, the Leger family has a big decision to make, whether to re-build in Newcastle.

“We love this location and everything and we love this land but we’re just not sure,” said Jason Leger.

MOORE, Okla. – Governor Mary Fallin said residents can return to their property to collect their belongings and what is salvageable and also start removing minor debris from their property.

Gov. Fallin said residents with small debris can start moving it to the curb and it will be picked up.

School is out for the year in Moore but students met Thursday morning to collect their belongings.

Moore schools is setting up a command center at Moore High School.

MOORE, Okla. – Navigating through Moore is now a bewildering experience; many of the usual landmarks are now piles of rubble.

Brenda Hedrick was at work when she realized the EF -5 tornado was heading straight for her home.

“I really expected when I did get home that I wasn’t going to have anything left. So, I was really surprised to see the house still standing,” said Hedrick.

However, the clock is ticking for Hedrick; her house is on the verge of caving in.

“Everything is starting to collapse with all this rain, the weight of the rain, everything is falling in,” said Hedrick.

“As you can see the area is starting to flood. The weather is putting a major damper on those peoples’ lives who just want to come back to their properties, sift through the damage and save whatever they can,” said Kringen.

Hedrick’s house might still be standing, but homes on her same block weren’t so lucky.

Bill Burns rode his bike to check on his sister-in-law’s house, who was in Mexico at the time of the destruction.

“I had to ask somebody if this was the street they lived on and I’d been here thousands of times. It was just remarkable, turning the corner and there are absolutely no houses,” said Burns.

Now, Burns is doing what he can to help his family out.

“I’m trying to get rid of this big tree because they’ve got a lot of personal things I believe up underneath the tree and we just want to make it safe to go through it,” said Burns.

Safety precautions many people are forced to take, in order to save their belongings.

Many families haven’t been able to get into their neighborhoods due to heavy damage, but have started to go through their homes with insurance agents to discuss damage costs and next steps.

If you need help after Oklahoma’s recent tornadoes, the first step is to register with FEMA.

Oklahoma emergency management officials said victims shouldn’t self-assess their situations, they should go ahead and apply to see if any help is available for them.

More: Tornado victim assistance and disaster relief

Residents needing birth and death certificates can get help at Cleveland County Health Dept.

If you would like to volunteer to help with disaster relief, officials ask you register online so they can coordinate events and need.

MOORE, Okla. – To say Chakara Redd is heartbroken would be an understatement.

She’s mourning the loss of her niece Janae Hornsby one of the seven students who died at Plaza Towers Elementary after the deadly Moore tornado.

“Its devastating,” Redd said. “It’s hard because Janae was only nine years old and not to mention we just buried her mom a year ago and to go through this now is hard.”

Janae’s mother Josselyn died unexpectedly last year from complications with lupus.

Her aunt Chakara and great aunt Janet saw her at a memorial service marking the one year anniversary of her mother’s death last month.

They had no idea that would be the last time they would see her.

“She went to go be with her mom,” said the third grader’s great aunt, Janet Rush. “That’s the only thing that is going to keep me going because I know her mom is going to take care of her and she’s going to give her all the love and the hugs she needs.

This social butterfly never met a stranger.

She had a second bedroom at her aunt Janet’s house.

She loved school and everything Hello Kitty.

The family wants people to remember the love she brought to their lives and the light that shined from within, not the tragic way she died.

“Spending time with her laughing, going to different restaurants and her teaching people how to love; those are my memories of Janae I will hold on to. She was just a happy sweet girl.”

The family is working to plan the funeral.

MOORE, Okla. – Family members of the mother and baby killed in Monday’s tornado said they “appreciate the outpouring of love and support from friends and strangers.”

Megan Futrell, 29, and her 3-month-old son Case were killed when the powerful twister destroyed the convenience store on 4th St. and Telephone Rd. in Moore.

“The family wants everyone to know what a great wife, mother, daughter and sister Megan was,” family member David Dobson said.

Futrell ran into the store and into a walk in freezer as the tornado hit the city.

First responders found Futrell and her son buried under all the debris.

According to her family, Futrell was a teacher at Highland West.

Dobson said she lived for her students and her family.

“Megan loved her boys most of all, husband Cody, son Cannon, and son Case who past along with his mom,” Dobson said.

The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult time.

MOORE, Okla. – A 33-year military man is hard at work right now, helping those whose lives were shattered by Monday’s tornado in Moore.

He can relate to their struggles because 18 years ago, his life was shattered at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Oklahomans love to help others in need.

But for Michael Treanor, a 1SG with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, helping the May 20 tornado victims is therapeutic.

He remembers April 19, 1995, more vividly than others.

“This is real similar,” Treanor said, “and then whenever you see the interviews with the parents that lost children, I understand that.”

He understands it because Treanor lost his parents, Luther and LaRue, as well as his stepdaughter, 4-year-old Ashley, in the bombing.

His dad was in the Social Security office to sign paperwork, so he could retire.

At 9:02 a.m., they were right by the window.

“You know, your memory of it really doesn’t change,” he said. “I still remember the pain and the details, the loneliness, the emptiness.”

Treanor’s unit from Ponca City wasn’t called in to help with search and rescue that day, so he joined the Guard’s Civil Support Team to make a difference.

He helped bring in the deceased after the May 3, 1999 tornado.

This week, he supervised a 22-man search and rescue team and continues to coordinate recovery efforts.

1995 is always in the back of Treanor’s mind, especially here.

But he said just being here helps him deal with it.

“It really does. It gives me a sense of purpose,” he said. “I couldn’t do anything in ’95 to help my step daughter and my mom and dad and obviously I can’t help those who passed away in this. But if they had been trapped in the rubble, our team is specifically trained to go rescue them. So it’s being able to get out there and do something that’s made the difference for me.”

Treanor said members from all military branches are showing up at the operations center in Moore to help.

He said you can see how much it means to them.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Ever since Tuesday morning, cars have been lining up outside KFOR studios.

It’s been an overwhelming outpouring of cash donations and supplies.

Sherri Rector brought t-shirts, paper towels and bottled water.

“This is the Oklahoma standard. This is what we do,” she said. “We are strong. We will recover.”

TMT trucking donated the big rig.

Our News Channel viewers did the rest!

Some kids donated all their summer vacation money.

We finished loading up the semi, then made our way down to Southgate Baptist Church in Moore, a staging area for donated supplies.

We found Pastor Doug Brewer and others giving it their all.

“It is overwhelming,” he said. “It is amazing not only the magnitude of the destruction, but it’s amazing because of the response.”

Johnny Pettigrew drove the 18 wheeler.
