CORDELL, Okla. — Tragedy strikes the small town of Cordell. A 12-year-old boy dies during a fight at church. Right now no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. The case is still being investigated.

At the First Baptist Church in Cordell, following youth services Wednesday night, a 12-year-old boy lost his life.

“It's a terrible tragedy, but I don't know any details to tell you,” Pastor Terrell Romberg said.

Investigators with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation say the victim, Lane Madison, died after getting into an altercation in the church basement with another kid.

“The 12 year old's head hit the floor. There was a thin layer of carpet over concrete. He was taken to a hospital and later died,” OSBI's Jessica Brown said.

Ultimately, it will be up to the Washita County District Attorney to decide if the case lands the alleged 13-year-old attacker in court.

“It's been a tough day,” Cordell school superintendent Brad Overton said.

The victim was in the 6th grade at Cordell Elementary.

“Lane's a good young man. He played football, wrestling and baseball. He was a good kid,” Overton said.

Whatever instigated the fight inside the church, the pastor hopes the community comes together to heal.

“I'm certain it's gonna be tough but this is a great community. It's gonna pull together and draw strength from each other,” Romberg said.

The State Medical Examineer's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
