NORMAN, Okla. — A mother is upset with Norman Public Schools after her 5-year-old daughter left school grounds without anyone knowing. Candi Martin said her daughter walked home from Kennedy Elementary School. Their house is about three blocks away.
Martin saw her daughter waiting outside as she arrived home around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.
“I was shaking. I was crying. My heart was beating a million miles a minute. I just couldn’t believe my baby was not where she was supposed to be. I thought she was safe in school,” Martin said.
School officials believe the child disappeared during recess.
An official said there should always be constant supervision during recess.
Teachers are also required to take attendance once the children return to the classroom.
“There is no excuse for anything like this. We are not going to make any excuses. We are thankful the student is safe,” Shelly Hickman said, Norman Public Schools.
An internal review of school policies and procedures is now underway.
