Norman residents escape tornado

NORMAN, Okla. -- Parts of Norman sustained heavy damage after a tornado passed through the city Friday afternoon.

Multiple buildings in the downtown area near Main St. and Porter Ave. were damaged.

A portion of Porter Ave. near East Hughbert St. was closed because of down power lines and debris in the street.

A building that is used by Norman Regional Hospital lost a portion of the roof.

"When we looked up the street my mom turned around to me and said, 'We are in it," and I was like, no way. We turned around and power lines are crashing and we watched the roof of this building fly straight up,"one witness said.

Hospital officials said the building is used to hold old medical records.

No one was inside at the time of the tornado.
