DURANT, Okla.—A Texas man has died while trying to save a child in the Red River.

Officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol say 38-year-old Kenneth Cowart was in the river with two children around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

He and one child got out of the water when he noticed the second child struggling to make it to shore.

Cowart went back in the water to save the child but as he was approaching the shore, a strong current pulled him under.

We’re told both children were safe on shore but Cowart never resurfaced.

Fire officials located his body about 60 feet down the river from where he was last seen.

He was not wearing a life jacket.
