NORMAN, Okla. — Police said they are investigating an accident after a woman was hit and killed by a train.

Officers responded to the tracks around Main St. and James Garner Ave. around 10:30 p.m. Saturday after receiving a call about an accident involving a train.

Witnesses said they heard the train screech to a halt but didn’t know why.

Authorities said it is still unclear why the woman was on the tracks but said the incident happened just after the end of the OU football game.

“As you know, we have a lot of pedestrian traffic right now because the OU football game just ended,” Norman Police Capt. Todd Gibson said. “There were a lot of people out walking so there’s no indication as to why the person was on the train tracks.”

Police said this is not the first time this type of incident has happened.

In fact, there was another accident involving a train just a couple of weeks ago.

Officials said they will work with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad during the investigation.
