CHICKASHA, Okla. -- The driver of a pickup truck is dead after he crashed into the back of a school bus, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

The accident happened on US 62 Highway and State Highway 39 near Chickasha Monday afternoon.

Authorities said the driver passed another vehicle on the two lane highway, but didn't realize that the school bus was stopped and waiting to turn.

"The speedometer on the Ford Ranger pickup is stuck at 52 mph at the time of impact," Trooper Michael Jewell said. "We are unsure if that was the speed he was going. We're estimating that he was traveling around 65 to 70 mph."

Nine students were on the bus but there were no injuries.

Traffic in the area was re-routed for nearly two hours.

Authorities airlifted the driver of the pickup truck to the hospital.

OHP initially reported that the driver died at the scene.

His name has not been released.
