WILMINGTON, Del. (CNN)—Three people are dead and two police officers are recovering after being shot when a gunman opens fire inside a courthouse Monday morning.

Authorities say the man walked into the lobby of the New Castle County Courthouse around 8 a.m. and began shooting.

The gunman shot and killed two women inside the building, along with shooting two police officers.

The officers were wounded but not killed because they were wearing bulletproof vests.

Police returned fire and killed the gunman before he could injure anyone else.

Authorities evacuated the courthouse and did a floor-by-floor search to make sure there was only one gunman.

The Wilmington police chief is actually in Philadelphia to attend a discussion about gun safety with Vice President Joe Biden, law enforcement officials and members of Congress.
