Wellston resident wins storm shelter raffle
WELLSTON, Okla.—One resident in Wellston is a lot safer in a worst case scenario thanks to a little luck.
The City of Wellston decided to hold a variety of activities and contests last fall in honor of National Preparedness Month.
The Wellston Office of Emergency Management hosted a variety of Facebook trivia contests and giveaways, including a raffle for an above ground saferoom by Oz Saferooms.
The $7999 room offers a special kind of protection as there are no seams or joints on the structure to fail.
Organizers say the saferoom exceeds FEMA guidelines and has withstood having full sized vehicles dropped on them repeatedly.
During the contest, residents could purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win the shelter.
Long-time Wellston resident Margie Gilliam was selected as the winner.
The shelter was delivered to her home Monday morning, giving her a peace of mind in time for severe storm season.
The money raised from the event was used to keep others safe as well.
The funds purchased weather alert radios and smoke detectors for Wellston residents in need.
