The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new guidelines for treating ear infections in children.

The update sets more rigid criteria for accurately diagnosing an ear infection, one of the most common pediatric illnesses.

They also clarify when doctors should treat infections with antibiotics, over-the-counter pain relievers or just observation based on the child’s age and the severity of the symptoms.
