WASHINGTON—A New Jersey company is recalling thousands of pounds of meat because of reports of plastic being found inside the food.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Schmalz’s European Provisions is recalling 8,424 pounds of chicken and apple sausage.

Officials say the company received three complaints about customers finding plastic in their meals.

The recalled product is the 12 oz. vacuum packages of “Applegate Organics Chicken and Apple Sausage” with “use or freeze by” dates of March 17, 2013.

Officials say the recalled products bear the establishment number “P-5411” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

They were produced on Jan. 24, 2013 and were sold in retail stores nationwide.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the findings.

Consumers with questions about the recall should call Gina Asoudegan at (800) 587-5858.
