SHAWNEE, Okla. - A Shawnee woman whose parents were murdered three years ago met the same fate in her own home early Thursday morning, police said.

Her husband is the suspect.

Justin Byus, 25, now sits in the Pottawatomie County jail after being arrested around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, just outside his Granada Estates house.

Earlier, inside his home in the 20 block of Bella Vista Lane, police said he allegedly used a handgun to kill his wife, 35-year-old Cathy Byus.

"At this point it appears that this was probably a domestic situation of some nature," Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz said.

Frantz said Justin Byus made several phone calls after the shooting and then someone he spoke with contacted authorities.

Frantz said the couple's young child was in another room at the time of the shooting and is now staying with a relative.

"The true tragedy is we have a loss of life and we have a child that is probably going to grow up without parents," he said.

Tragedy has hit this family twice.

Cathy Byus' parents, Linda and Gary Haas of Tecumseh, were murdered by three prison escapees in New Mexico in 2010 while they were on vacation.

"It's really sad, you know," neighbor Cathy Hobbs said. "Especially for the children."

Police are not releasing details on the shooting or the motive.

However, Frantz said they had been called out to the home several times in the past on domestic disturbance complaints.

Formal charges against Justin Byus had not been filed as of Thursday afternoon.
