EDMOND, Okla. - A third grade teacher in the metro is arrested for an unusual crime.

Lisa Ann Thompson, 55, was arrested over the weekend after essentially turning herself in pretending to be a Good Samaritan.

"When this story started out, she looked like a Good Samaritan but ultimately she ended up being arrested for stealing someones money," Edmond police officer James Hamm said.

Hamm says it all began after Thompson stopped by the Edmond police department.

The woman pretended to be a good Samaritan and told officers she found a lost wallet in a Homeland parking lot.

Officer Hamm said when police tracked down the wallet's owner, he said several $20 bills were missing.

"They delivered it back to the owner who said he was missing $150 in cash," Hamm said.

That's when officers went back to Homeland, looked at surveillance video and realized the woman actually found the wallet inside at a checkout lane.

"After the person who lost the wallet walked away from the check out stand, she picked it up and left the store and that's when the money was missing," Hamm said.

Using the suspects Homeland card account, police tracked Thompson down at her home.

The third grade teacher allegedly admitted what she did was wrong and even gave the stolen money back.

According to police reports, Thompson told police she'd been suffering from depression and added "I've made a huge mistake."

"If you find somebody's property, turn it in," Hamm said.

Hamm said the unusual crime in the parking lot should send a message; if anyone finds lost property, do the right thing and return it intact.

"You have to think if you lost your wallet, you'd want someone to turn your information in," Hamm said.

The suspect was booked into the Edmond jail over the weekend but bonded out a short time later.

The woman works as a third grade teacher at John Adams Elementary in Oklahoma City.
