ISTANBUL — Riot police use tear gas and water cannons on anti-government protesters in Istanbul’s Taksim Square.

The governor of Istanbul on Tuesday night said those protesting in his city belong to “marginal groups,” whom he blamed for attacking police and others.

In remarks broadcast on Turkish television, Gov. Huseyin Avni Mutlu echoed the view of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government in urging people to leave Taksim Square and saying the government will take necessary measures until protesters leave.
