WAURIKA, Okla. – Two people drowned over the weekend in Jefferson County’s Waurika Lake.

The Okla. Highway Patrol confirmed 41-year-old Gary Burkhart and 18-year-old Maximiliano Garcia died in the water.

Troopers said the lake water was extremely rough when Burkhart and his wife jumped in to swim.

While his wife was trying to find a life jacket, Burkhart went under and never came back up.

Troopers said Garcia was trying to get a soccer ball but went out too far in the water and started to struggle.

Family members said they tried to reach him but he went under and never resurfaced.

Officials have reported three drownings at this lake since June 8.
