OKLAHOMA CITY- Disasters can happen at any moment but the American Red Cross of Central of Western Oklahoma is hoping everyone will take a few minutes to get ready for the next emergency.

September is National Preparedness Month, which is led by the Red Cross.

Having a game plan in place is essential for all households so everyone knows what they should do when an emergency occurs,” said Janienne Bella, regional CEO. “National Preparedness Month is a perfect time for Oklahoma residents to create or update their plan.”

Families are encouraged to make a plan and should include ways to contact one another and two predetermined places to meet.

Residents should also identity an emergency contact person from outside the area in case local telephone lines are overloaded or out of service.

The plan should also include decisions about where family members will go if ordered to evacuate and what route to take to get there.

Consider alternative routes and where pets will go in case of an emergency or evacuation order.

Also, build an emergency kit that is easy to carry that contains the following:

  • A three-day supply of water, which is one gallon per person, per day
  • Nonperishable food
  • A flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Extra batteries
  • A first aid kit
  • A 7-day supply of medications
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Sanitation items
  • Personal hygiene itsm
  • Copies of important personal documents.

To make it easier, families can download the Red Cross apps with information on what to do before, during and after emergencies.
