PONCA CITY, OKLAHOMA -- There was a time, not long ago, when the whimsical decorations on Melody Young's business walls were actual whimsy, the stuff of her dreams alone.

"I really didn't know what it would look like until it actually went up," she says of the days before she changed careers.

"It looks to me like you've got your stamp all over this place," remarks a first time visitor to UnWINEd.

"Yes. I do," she replies.

Her old job had her at a desk full time, working in the oil and gas industry.

Melody's life was tied to office work.

"I had this thought of, 'oh my gosh. I'm going to have this corporate job and have to go to meetings for the rest of my life.' I hate meetings," says Young.

Then, a couple of years back, Melody made her own bucket list.

At the top, she put opening up her own place.

She got a bank loan, a building on Grande Avenue, and built UnWINEd.

Melody says, "I just wanted it to be a relaxed, non-smoking place where everybody can come in and 'un-wind'."

Young and her husband decorated on the cheap, buying surplus from school sales and raiding her own stuff.

They built some things too including a chandelier made of champagne glasses that hangs in the private party room.

Changing jobs proved to be a lot of work but the Youngs kept their sense of humor.

"Just always trying to re-invent it," she says.

Melody never managed to unwind as much as she dreamed.

She opened for lunch, made her own pickles to serve, and planned events to get people through the door.

Young says, "Just to keep the electric on."

Melody still has a desk.

She just never sits there.

'Un-Wineding' keeps her busier than she eve thought she'd be but that's the best part.

"I have my wine," she smiles, "And it's my job to drink wine. There are worse things you could do."

UnWINEd is located at 217 East Grand Avenue in Ponca City.
