The system that's impacting the U.S. right now is being called a "polar vortex."

This new video shows the system moving over Lake Michigan.

The polar vortex is circulation of strong, upper-level winds that normally surround the North Pole.

When the vortex becomes distorted, it sends frigid air further south than normal.
